ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the clinical value and sonographic features of locally advanced cervical carcinoma using transvaginal color Doppler ultrasound(TVCDU). Methods A retrospctive analysis was carried on 2-D sonograms. And color Doppler flow imaging(CDFI) in 106 cases, confirmed by pathology and surgery. Results In locally advanced cervical carcinoma, the characteristerics on TVCDU were cervical enlargment, cervical masses accompanying with uteral effusion and extracervical infiltrative masses. The rich cervical blood flow signals demonstrated as called “fireball" sign. In early cervical carcinoma, the cervix showed no apparent cervical enlargment. The blood flow signals were increased. The average RI was 0.41. Conclusions TVCDU which is very valuable in judging the infiltration extent and in differential diagnosis preoperatively can be used as a routine examination method before locally advanced cervical carcinoma treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the role of transvaginal sonography in diagnosing the normal cervix and its benign lesions. Methods The one handred and thirty-eight women without malignant findings by colposcopy examination underwent transvaginal sonography within 2 weeks before hyterectomy. The sonography findings were compared with the pathology report. Results Cervical cysts(39 cases) were the most common sonography findings. In 17 cases, endocervical polyps were found sonographically,in 14 cases, myomas were found, and in 27 cases cervicitis were found. The cervix showed no sonographic abnormal in 41. Pathologic results showed 42 cervical cysts, 14 cervical polyps, 16 myomas, 17 cervicitis and 49 normal cervices. Conclusions The sensitivity and specificity of transviginal sonography are high in diagnosing normal cervices and benign cervical lessions. Transviginal sonography provides reliable diagnosing information about the cervix for clinic.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the gray-scale, color and pulsed Doppler sonographic feature of the corpus luteum during the early trimester of pregnancy. Methods The ovaries of 174 patients with intrauterine gestations between 5 to 9 weeks' menstrual age were examined with transvaginal sonography. Size, sonographic appearance, color Doppler feature, resistance index, peak systolic velocity of the corpus letuem were recorded. Results The corpus luteum was identified in 169 of 174 patients(97.1%) . The mean diameter was ( 1.7 ? 0.8 ) cm. The gray-scale appearances were classified into four types:a thin wall cyst(47 patients, 27.8 %), a thick wall simple cyst(45 patients, 26.6 %), a round hypoechoic structure(43 patients, 25.4 %), a thin-walled cyst containing internal debris (34 patients, 20.1 %). Color blood flow was visualized with color Doppler imaging in 92.3 %(156/169). Color Doppler imaging typically revealed a circumferential rim surrounding part or all of the corpus luteum. Low-resistance blood flow was seen with pulsed Doppler, with a mean resistance index of 0.41?0.10 . Conclusions The corpus lutuem in early pregnancy is identified with transvaginal sonography and has different sonographic appearances. It is important to recognize the various appearances of the corpus lutuem to avoidits confusion with true ovarian abnormalities and ectopic pregnancy.
